Running my little micro-farm takes, lots and lots of planning. Especially, if you have a tight budget, limited time and a goal of improving your garden space each season.
I like to start with the broad skeleton of my space. Here you can see the design and layout of my back garden area. One of three vegetable gardening spaces, this is the largest, also containing my shed, chicken coop and future quail coop and run.
After I have created my overall plan, I go in for more detail, planting schemes (yes, planting schemes for vegetables) and any materials I will need to by and plan for. I try to keep similar themes to each bed and follow companion planting. Some areas are planted in permaculture, where others are farmed in a more conventional method.
I have lots of planning to do, and it will hopefully keep me busy throughout the winter before hatching season starts up again. I have some unique ideas for some tropical plants being added from my winter indoor season, including; pineapple and citrus plants.
My micro-farm is very important to me, it's fairly productive, providing bushels of organic produce, relaxation and a de-stressing environment for me, the birds and the insects. Being able to grow produce for myself and my family makes me feel whole. I'm looking forward to seeing my vision come to life and share my garden with the public.
