Sunbathing

Had my 3 month old birds outside for a nice free-range on a warm sunny day this week!
Stretching out their wings. Two of my Swedish Flower Hens...
they eventually made a pile amoungst the foliage in the sun.
My Smooth Buff Laced Polish... she's an excellent forager.

One of my tuffted Swedish Flower Hens... she seemed to enjoy the sun the most!

Dreaming of Quail Keeping

I want quail. As soon as I bought my first chicken, it was the next thing I needed to add to my suburban farm. I haven't found lots of resources on quail keeping, but the common thread seems to say it's like keeping mini chickens and its super easy. Quail eggs are small, but large by the size of the bird they come from.
Cute quail egg watercolour print!
Fresh greens, tender herbs and quail eggs
I'm looking forward to doing some research and planning over the winter, picking up my first quail at the end of April! I think I'll get between 4-6 birds, a mix of varieties... which might mean a custom hatch, as not to introduce different ages. I would like some unique varieties but Coturnix seem to be the best producer of speckled eggs. Stay tunned... the quail are coming! Lots of and lots of planning!

I would like some Gambel's quail, but they are less winter hardy. Love this print!
Cute, tasty, nutritious, organic, beautiful! What more could you ask for?
This is what I want to see on my counter in the morning!

Glorious Fall

Fall is bitter sweet to a gardener. I love the colours, the ripening crops, the warm cool days when you can wear a sweater and rock some sunglasses. My bulb planting is almost done, and I'm starting to mulch leaves over my weeded beds. The bad part about fall is that it signifies season's end. You can't plant anything else, without risk of frost, or slow growth. I'm all ready itching about next season and it frustrates me that I have the long wait ahead... and it hasn't even started. In the meantime, I have to stay distracted with the chickens, and fall garden chores.

Pumpkins. They are good for five things. One, fall decor around the house and on the porch. Two, buy ahead for pumpkin carving and Halloween decor. Three, supporting local growers. Four, pumpkin pie and other baked goods. Five, seed saving, some for me, some for the seed exchange. Other pumpkin and squash activities might include; chicken treats, smashing, and art inspiration.

Massive pile of gourds, white pumpkins and classic orange!
(Of course I picked up one of each... or more)
Little pumpkins, big pumpkins, an army of pumpkins.
My favourite shot of the day! Gorgeous large pumpkins!

"Peanut" stands at-top the warty pumpkin I picked up. You can also
see a beautiful blue-gray pumpkin from my friend Bobby!
I thought the warty pumpkin was a nice spin on the classic!

Bouquet of fresh herbs; Sage, Rosemary and Thyme.
My contribution to the turkey on Thanksgiving.
With all my decor efforts I just had to snap these pictures of my youngest chickens out to play on my fall display. I dried my ornamental corn, placed a dozen gourds, squash and pumpkins, two dozen ornamental corn cobs and one vintage wagon... filled with more decor! (Photos of display coming soon!)
Hide and seek on the wagon. This is the
Easter egger chick - turning a blue-gold partridge colour!
This is my Easter Egger/Wheaten Ameraucana x Salmon Faverolle chick.
My youngest "keepers" are about 6 weeks old.
